QUALIFICATION EXAM, STANDARS FOR WORK PRESENTATION AND FORMS STANDARDS FOR QUALIFICATION EXAM (registered students from 08/2009 to 05/08/2014).

VIII – QUALIFICATION EXAM (QE)

All documents below must be handed in to the Microbiology Postgraduate Office (ICB II – room 202) until closing of the program’s agenda (CCP-BMM), as members of the student’s qualification board will be outlined at this meeting.
The Qualification Exam is required for both Masters and Doctorate (and Direct Doctorate). The registration for the QE is the student’s responsibility and must be completed within the maximum allowed time set by the program in the existing Regulation at his initial enrolment, before it meets with the limit set by Janus System.

The exam must be taken maximum 60 days after registration for the QE.

The postgraduate student that does not complete the exam in the expected time for his course will be terminated from program, as stated in item V, article 52 of USP’s Postgraduate Regulations.
The examination comittee must be formed by three members appointed by the CCP, PhD being the minimum title, with at least one full supervisor from the Biological Sciences Program (Microbiology) of ICB-USP. The CCP will appoint theexamination committee’s president always, whenever possible, respecting the members’ hierarchy. The supervisor and co-supervisor, if present, cannot be a part of the examination committee.
The student that fails the qualification exam can sign up to take it again only one more time, at most 180 days after taking the first exam. The second exam must be taken at most 60 days after signing up for it.
Should the student fail the exam again, he will be discontinued from the Program and will receive a certificate for the taken courses.

VIII. 1 – Masters

VIII.1.1 – The Masters student must sign up for said exam in a maximum period of 15 (fifteen) months after first enrolling in the course.

VIII.1.2 – The objective of the qualification exam for Masters is to evaluate the student’s academic record, his knowledge on the project’s theme, beside the student’s capacity of executing his research project.

VIII.1.3 – For the Masters, the exam will be an evaluation of the research work in the form of a manuscript for publication and an oral presentation about the ongoing research project, as well as an analysis of the Postgraduate academic record.

VIII.1.4 – In order to sign up the following documents are necessary:

VIII.1.4.1 – qualification exam forms (request, statement from the supervisor and suggestion of 10 (ten) names to form the examination committee, with at least four external members to ICB, without a direct link to the supervisor or the student). The suggestion for the committee must be filled out according to the lattes CV of each appointed participant, and if necessary can be altered by the CCP. The forms that can be found in the webpage for the Postgraduate Program must be filled and printed out;

VIII.1.4.2 – certificates of approval and/or exemption from the Ethics in Research Committee of ICB;

VIII.1.4.3 – student’s form (Janus system) with approval in the Radiological Protection course, for students that use radiological material in their work;

VIII.1.4.4 – Description of the ongoing research project in the form of a manuscript for publication, with a maximum of 20 (twenty) pages, in 03 (three) printed copies and a PDF file sent to micropos@icb.usp.br. The manuscript, in English or Portuguese, must contain: Title, Authors, Abstract, Introduction, Objectives, Material and Methods, Partial Results and Partial Discussion, Perspective, future chronogram and References. As an appendix, there can be included published, accepted, submitted or in submission phase manuscripts, written in English of Portuguese, as long as they are a part of
the Dissertation work and the student’s name is presented as first author.

VIII.1.5 – An oral presentation, in public session, with a minimum time of twenty minutes and maximum time of thirty minutes, followed by discussion by the examination committee, in private session, with the members of the committee determined by the CCP. Each member will have up to thirty minutes for discussion, followed by the candidate’s response up to thirty minutes. Optionally, the discussion can be in the form of dialog, with a total of sixty minutes for discussion from each member and the candidate’s response.

VIII.1.6 – The evaluation will be released in the form of a detailed opinion, and the candidate must be approved by most of the members in the committee.

VIII. 2 – PhD

VIII.2.1 – The PhD students must sign up for the qualification exam in a period of maximum 24 months after thebeginning of the course’s term count.

VIII.2.2 – The objective of the qualification exam for PhD is to evaluate the student’s postgraduate academic record, their capacity of developing, in an independent manner, their thesis project, in their field of research and the ongoingresearch project.

VIII.2.3 – For PhD, the exam will consist of an evaluation of the research project in the form of a manuscript for publication; the candidate’s didactic capacity through an evaluation of an oral presentation about the ongoing research project; an evaluation of the student’s knowledge in the area; and their capacity to conduct the essays in an independent manner, as well as an analysis of their postgraduate academic record.

VIII.2.4 – In order to sign up the following documents are necessary:

VIII.3.1 – The Direct Doctorate student must sign up to take the qualification exam in a maximum period of 30 (thirty) months after the beginning of the course’s term count.

VIII.3.2 – The objectives of the qualification exam for Direct Doctorate are the same for PhD. The will be conducted according to PhD rules.

Obs.: all ICB professors, accredited supervisors in microbiology to offer discipline and orientation as well. Retired professors from ICB and alumni of microbiology are considered internal. The list of board members suggestions must contain at least 04 (four) EXTERNAL MEMBERS to ICB/USP, without direct link to the supervisor, laboratory or the student.
